Suddenly, Big Ben struck the hour. The vibration of the great bell knocked Basil and Ratigan off their feet. Everyone in the balloon screamed as they watched Ratigan plummet to the ground. Basil, it seemed, had also met his end.

"It's all over," Dawson sobbed. "Our brave friend is gone."

"No, he isn't! Look!" cried Olivia, pointing toward Basil, who was merrily pedaling along on what was left of Ratigan's airship. He drew alongside and Dawson pulled him safely aboard. Olivia threw her arms around the detective's neck and kissed him.

"Well, now," Basil said, patting Olivia's head. "I say it's high time we all go back home."

The above text is a small portion from the book, "Disney's Treasury of Children's Classics From The Fox and the Hound to The Hunchback of Notre Dame." This was fully drawn by me on 5/24/10. I then colored it in CorelDRAW Photo Paint 8. Click HERE to view the sketch version. This picture was slightly cropped from the original.

When I got the book and read that particular scene, I wanted to capture the moment onto paper. I looked through some screenshots as a guide, but the majority of it is of my own creation such as their positions. The one thing I'm not happy with is Olivia's arm. I could not get it looking the way I had planned. Basil looks like...a mess, but that's the point. After viewing several images, I could see he was badly scratched and his clothes horribly torn. I debated leaving his eyes normal or having a slight glaze to them from his emotions taking over. He's not going to start bawling on the spot, but I felt he would get a little teared up from receiving such a greeting from Olivia.

By the way, I wanted to watermark the picture (like I do with all of my drawings), but the dA's watermark logo blocked a lot of the picture itself, so I made my own. Hopefully it'll serve its purpose without ruining the drawing. Thank you for viewing and comments are greatly appreciated.

The Great Mouse Detective and its characters is Eve Titus/Disney

Awwwww. <3 I would've loved to have seen them all welcoming Basil back on the balloon in the movie. Poor guy got the wind knocked outta him. :(

If not in the film at least on a DVD bonus track under "Deleted Scenes." I'd be up to see that. :)

I don't think the vibration of Big Ben knocked both Basil and Ratigan off their feet, it was only Ratigan, because when his blow sends Basil down from the tip of the hour hand of Big Ben, Basil had managed to catch the propellor of Ratigan's ruined dirigible.

You're right, that's how it happened. The reason why it's different is because I typed the scene word for word from the storybook. They changed it a bit from the film.

Awww! ;p This was a scene from an official Disney treasury book. The writer felt something like this would happen once Basil reunited with his friends. I'd like to think it did too! :aww:

Thanks so much. I've done free hand drawings for several years. It's always been a good source of therapy. This particular picture was done a month after I had surgery on my right shoulder. I found out the hard way I was still sore. You haven't found very many drawings because I stopped in 2011 when the pain was too much to continue. I really want to draw again, and I thought about just doing it despite it hurting.

Thank you for asking. Yes, you may use my image. Please don't forget to credit me, too! :)

Thanks! Corel has a blur tool that works great on cloud effects. I first masked the entire sky and colored it a solid blue, then heavily blended it with several shades of blue, bits of black, and even sea green. The blur tool is also nice for shadow effects on the characters. :)

I used Photoshop to color in this picture [link] If I wanted to draw an accurate background for it (Basil's home, most likely), how would you suggest I do it?

Owch! :O_o: Those scratches look painful! My suggestion is to put them in a bedroom scene. I'm thinking Dawson would be patching up Basil's wounds in the privacy of his own room, so you could try looking around at 19th century bedrooms to get ideas. I drew Basil's bedroom once and it was just a guess of how it looked.

Well I was thinking the living room, since I know what it looks like, but since the backgrounds are rather complicated, I was thinking it would pretty hard to draw it. Do you know, like, any Photoshop effects or anything that would make the background look more accurate?

Oh, okay, if in the main sitting room then, I would hope Olivia and her father went to stay at an inn until Basil gets patched up. He doesn't need an audience. I'm not familiar with Photoshop, just Corel, but often times I'll use a stock photo from the Corel disc. I would say the best solution is to look over a screenshot of the sitting room, draw it on a piece of paper and then scan it onto your computer. You could then mask Basil and Dawson and paste them with the background, followed by blending them seamlessly together. I don't recommend taking an actual screenshot from the film and pasting them within it because screenshots are not allowed, unfortunately. :(

I tried to throw my old stuff away, but my sister rescued it all from the garbage. ;p I then received a long lecture about the importance of keeping past drawings to look back on my progress...that, and no work of art should ever get thrown away. I was like, "Yeah, but what if it's gawd awful?"

Aww, I don't think it's creepy. ;p The poor guy just got beaten up by his adversary and then almost fell to his death. I agree a hug would have been fine alone, but this is Olivia here, one who got really attached to the detective and considered him a true hero. Hell, I would have done it if I were her. ;) If I thought my hero died and then minutes later he's climbing back up towards me, my joy would have no bounds. :D

BTW, my original idea for this scene was only a hug, but that was...gads, three years ago. Looking at old art now makes it seem so foreign to me. :omfg: Thank you very much for the comment! I appreciate all and any feedback! :D
